HireVue Interview Guide 2027: How to Pass HireVue for Spring Week, Summer, Off-Cycle and Graduate Roles

Quick answer: how do you pass a HireVue interview?
You pass a HireVue by treating it like a real interview with a real banker. Because it usually is one.
Research the bank. Do multiple dry runs. Dress the part. Look into the camera. Lead with your strongest point in the first 15 seconds. Stay inside the time limit.
And if HireVue keeps knocking you out? Apply to boutiques that don't use it.

Many students struggle with HireVue.
Not because they aren't good enough. Because they treat it like a formality.
If you're applying for a 2027 spring week, summer internship, off-cycle internship or graduate role, HireVue is often the first real filter between your CV and an in-person interview.
Get it wrong → rejection email.
Get it right → first round, and for some spring weeks, an offer straight away.
I've helped thousands of students break into top investment banks, asset managers and private equity firms, including Goldman Sachs, J.P. Morgan, Morgan Stanley, Bank of America, BlackRock, Blackstone and KKR.
And I've seen the same pattern again and again. Strong candidates with great CVs fall at the HireVue stage. Not because they lack ability. Because nobody showed them how this format actually works.
What is a HireVue interview?
HireVue is a one-way video interview. No interviewer on the call. Just you, a question on screen and a countdown timer.
Firms reported to use it include J.P. Morgan, Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley, BlackRock and Evercore. Here's how it typically works for 2027 intakes:
Number of questions: 3 to 5 (some candidates report up to 8)
Prep time per question: roughly 30 seconds to 2 minutes
Answer time per question: roughly 1.5 to 2 minutes
Retakes: sometimes one, sometimes none. Check before you start
Deadline to complete: often 48 to 72 hours after the invite
Where it sits: usually step one after the online tests, before first round
Two things most students get wrong:
1. "It's just AI scoring me." Not usually. Most banking HireVues are watched by a human, typically HR or a junior from the team you've applied to.
2. "I'll just memorise last year's questions." Banks pull from a large pool. Summer analyst HireVues often draw 5 questions from a pool of 50 or more, and J.P. Morgan's pool is reported at 100 to 150. You can predict the type of question, not the exact one.
So prepare for categories:
Motivational → Why this bank? Why this division? Walk me through your CV.
Competency → Tell me about a time you led a team / hit a tight deadline / used data.
Situational → Two VPs give you conflicting tasks. What do you do?
Commercial → A recent deal we advised on. A news story you're following. Big trends in the industry.
The step-by-step guide to passing your HireVue
In my experience, around 70% of students fail their HireVue.
Not because they aren't capable. Because they don't have a process.
Here is the step-by-step approach to pass your HireVue interviews at top high finance companies.
Step 1: Study this guide thoroughly
Learn the 10-point framework, the 15-second rule and the example answers below. Know what the reviewer is looking for before you record a single answer.
Step 2: Use AI to draft answers to at least 25 HireVue questions
Use Claude or ChatGPT to build first drafts. Then rewrite each one in your own words, with your own experiences. Use this prompt:
"Act as an investment banking recruiter at [firm] reviewing HireVue interviews for a [2027 spring week / summer internship / off-cycle internship / graduate role] in [division]. Here is my CV: [paste CV]. Give me 25 HireVue questions this firm is likely to ask, covering motivational, competency, situational and commercial questions. For each one, draft a 90-second answer using my real experiences. Open with a one-line headline answer, put my strongest point in the first 15 seconds, and end with a link back to the role. Flag any answer where I need a more specific example, deal or name."
Step 3: Practise your delivery and get a score
Once you're comfortable with the material, practise your delivery. Do close-to-real-life HireVue interviews on cityinterned.com for more than 30 top investment banks, private equity firms and asset managers, and get a score on every attempt.
Step 4: Repeat until you score 75+
Watch your recordings back. Fix your pace, eye contact and structure. Go again until you consistently score 75+ on our platform.
Step 5: Take the real thing
You've done the work. Now record it for real.
My 10-point HireVue framework
1. Research the bank
Study recent deals, culture and news.
Pick two deals the bank advised on in the last 6 months. Know who the client was, roughly what it was worth and why it mattered. That one detail separates you from most applicants, who say "I'm passionate about your culture."
2. Do multiple dry runs
Use HireVue's practice question features and prepare concise responses.
Then record yourself on your phone and watch it back. Most people speak much faster than they think. You only find out on playback.
Practise for free → you can run bank-specific HireVue practice interviews free on cityinterned.com. There are 30 of the top investment banks, private equity, equity research and asset management firms, including Bank of America, Morgan Stanley, J.P. Morgan, UBS, Goldman Sachs, 3i, KKR and Blackstone.
3. Dress professionally
Even for a virtual interview.
Suit and tie, or blazer and blouse. Solid colours look best on camera. Wearing smart trousers too is optional, but it helps you feel in the zone.
4. Maintain eye contact
Look into the camera. Not at your own face on screen.
Set your laptop at eye level. No laptop stand? Stack some books.
5. Speak confidently and clearly
Pause between sentences.
A pause feels long to you. To the reviewer it sounds like control.
6. Be real
Show enthusiasm, but stay professional.
You want to sound prepared, not scripted. Learn your bullet points, not a paragraph word for word.
7. Respect the allotted time
Stay on point.
Aim to finish 10 to 15 seconds early. Getting cut off mid-sentence is the worst ending you can have.
8. Prepare the common questions
A simple Google search on the common questions that bank asks in HireVue goes a long way.
Also ask in student group chats. With thousands of members, someone has almost certainly done the same HireVue last week.
9. Check your tech
Ensure everything works perfectly.
Laptop, not phone. Wired or strong Wi-Fi. Charger plugged in. Notifications off. Light in front of you, not behind.
10. Stay composed
Remember, it's just a recording.
If one answer goes badly, reset. Each question is scored on its own.
Prepare well. Prepare early.
The 15-second rule most students miss
The most important tip I can give you: make sure you have a strong introduction.
Some HireVues use AI scoring, but many are watched by humans. So the way you introduce yourself really matters.
Research backs this up. In a study of nearly 700 student interviews, published in the Journal of Occupational and Organizational Psychology, 60% of interviewers said they'd made their decision within the first 15 minutes of a 30-minute interview. Before it was even halfway through.
In a HireVue, that window is even shorter.
Bank analysts and HR reviewers often decide on a candidate within the first 15 to 30 seconds of an answer.
Think about it. A first-year analyst working 80-hour weeks has been asked to watch hundreds of videos. By minute two, they've zoned out.
So:
Front-load your best material → relevant internship, sector language, people you've spoken to at the bank.
Use a "contents page" opener → one sentence telling them what you're about to cover.
Thank them → a quick "thank you for taking the time to watch this" at the start. Almost nobody does it.
Example opener:
"Thank you for watching. I'll cover three things: my internship in [sector], which got me interested in [division]; my conversations with [name] on your team; and why [specific deal or strategy] makes [bank] my first choice."
Fifteen seconds. The reviewer already knows you're serious.
Real HireVue questions (and sample answers) from Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley and J.P. Morgan
These questions have been reported by candidates on Glassdoor and interview-prep sites. The answers are frameworks. Swap in your own experience, and a deal or story you've actually researched. Each runs about 60 to 90 seconds out loud.
Goldman Sachs HireVue questions
Q: What would you do if a client made a request that violates firm policy?
"I'd decline the request politely, explain why, and escalate to my manager straight away. A client relationship is worth a lot. The firm's reputation is worth more. In practice, I'd first make sure I'd understood the request correctly. Then I'd tell the client we can't do it in that form, and offer an alternative that stays within policy if one exists. Finally, I'd document it and loop in compliance. I faced a smaller version of this as treasurer of [society], when a sponsor asked us to promote them in a way our student union rules didn't allow. I said no, offered a compliant alternative, and we kept the sponsor for the next year."
Why it works → clear answer in the first sentence, a simple process, then real evidence.
Q: Talk about a time you succeeded despite being under intense pressure.
"During my [internship / exams], I had [specific task] due in 48 hours while [second pressure]. I broke the work into blocks, agreed priorities with my manager on day one, and flagged a risk early instead of hoping it would go away. We delivered on time, and [result, with a number if you can]. What I learned: under pressure, communicate early and prioritise ruthlessly."
Q: Why Goldman Sachs?
"Three reasons: the [division] franchise, the people I've spoken to, and [a specific recent deal]. [Name] in [team] told me how juniors get real responsibility on live deals early, and that's the environment I want. And [deal] showed me exactly the kind of work I want to be part of, because [one-line reason]."
Other Goldman questions candidates report: your proudest achievement; how you'd react if a team member was being dishonest; what makes Goldman different from its competitors; a time you disagreed with a colleague.
Morgan Stanley HireVue questions
Q: Why Morgan Stanley?
"I'll touch on the firm's strategy, my conversations with the team, and fit. Morgan Stanley has built one of the largest wealth and asset management businesses alongside a top-tier investment bank, which gives it a stable base through market cycles. I spoke with [name] about [team], and what stood out was [specific thing]. I'm also following [recent deal], because [why it interests you]. That mix of a strong franchise and a culture people describe as collaborative is why it's my first choice."
Q: Tell me about a time you needed to adapt to a significant change.
"Two weeks before our [project / competition] deadline, our lead dropped out and the brief changed. I re-planned the work with the remaining three of us, took on the financial analysis myself, and set daily 10-minute check-ins. We submitted on time and placed [result]. The lesson: when plans change, reset the plan quickly and over-communicate."
Q: Tell me about a time you received critical feedback.
"On my [internship], my manager told me my first slides were too dense. Rather than defend them, I asked for an example of what good looked like, rebuilt the deck, and from then on sent a one-line summary of each slide before formatting it. My next piece of work went to the client with minimal edits."
Other Morgan Stanley questions candidates report: walk us through your proudest achievement; a time you showed initiative; your greatest strengths and how they fit Morgan Stanley; walk us through your education.
J.P. Morgan HireVue questions
Q: What attracts you to J.P. Morgan, and specifically to [division]? (reported for a Summer Analyst HireVue in January 2026)
"Two things: J.P. Morgan's scale and stability, and what I've learned about [division]. The firm's fortress balance sheet means it can keep supporting clients through any cycle. In [division], I like that [specific feature, e.g. working with clients across their whole financial life]. Speaking to [name] confirmed that juniors get real client exposure early. That's the combination I'm after."
Q: Tell me about a time you were challenged to be persistent to reach an important goal.
"I applied for [X] and was rejected the first time. I asked for feedback, which was that I lacked [skill]. Over six months I [specific actions, e.g. completed a course, built a model, ran a society project]. I reapplied and was accepted. That's how I approach goals: get feedback, close the gap, go again."
Q: Why is J.P. Morgan different from other banks?
"Breadth. Few firms combine a leading investment bank with a huge commercial bank, asset and wealth management, and consumer banking. That means clients can be covered across almost every need, and juniors see a wider range of work. [Add one recent deal or initiative you've researched.]"
Other J.P. Morgan questions candidates report: a time you produced an innovative strategy for a unique problem; give an example of leadership; what you'd do if paired with a weak team.
Your 2-minute answer structure
0 to 15 seconds → thank them, give your headline answer and a mini contents page.
15 to 75 seconds → the story or reasons, with specifics (names, numbers, deals).
75 to 105 seconds → the result and what you learned.
Final 15 seconds → one line linking it back to the role. Then stop.
Still not getting in-person interviews? Cast a wider net
Here's the key takeaway.
If HireVue keeps knocking you out, double down on applications to boutiques that don't use HireVue.
There are around 2,000 high finance firms in the UK. My guess is fewer than 200 use HireVue.
That means roughly 90% of the market will judge you on a CV, a cover letter and a real conversation. Boutique M&A advisers, mid-market private equity, independent asset managers, corporate finance houses and specialist debt advisers all hire spring, summer, off-cycle and graduate talent. Many run off-cycle internships year-round, not just in the September to January rush.
For 2027 applications, that looks like:
Keep the bulge brackets → apply early, and prepare for HireVue properly using the framework above.
Add 20 to 30 boutiques → networking and direct applications often beat a mass-screening process.
Target off-cycle roles → fewer applicants, rolling deadlines, and a strong route into a 2027 or 2028 graduate offer.

HireVue FAQs
Is HireVue scored by AI or a human?
Mostly by humans. Most banking HireVues are watched by HR or a junior from the team you applied to. Treat it like a live interview.
How many questions are in a HireVue interview?
Usually 3 to 5. Some candidates report more. You typically get under 2 minutes of prep and around 1.5 to 2 minutes to answer each one.
Can you retake a HireVue answer?
It depends on the bank and the role. Some allow one retake per question, others allow none. Check the instructions on the first screen before you start.
What should I wear for a HireVue interview?
Business formal: a suit and tie, or a blazer with a blouse or a professional dress. Solid colours work best on camera.
How long do I have to complete a HireVue?
Often 48 to 72 hours from the invite, but it varies. Don't leave it to the last hour. Banks recruiting for 2027 spring weeks and summer internships often fill places on a rolling basis.
Can I find out the HireVue questions in advance?
Sometimes, but rarely. In my experience, only a handful of firms, such as BlackRock, tend to reuse the same HireVue questions. Most banks draw from a large pool, so you won't know exactly which questions you'll get. Still, past questions, from Glassdoor and student group chats, show you which categories to prepare for.
Which banks use HireVue?
Firms reported to use HireVue include Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley, J.P. Morgan, BlackRock and Evercore. Many boutiques don't, and go straight to a phone or in-person interview. You can find the full list of companies that use HireVue on cityinterned.com.
Is HireVue used for spring weeks, off-cycle internships and graduate roles?
Yes, at many large banks it's used across all of them. For some spring weeks, a strong HireVue can lead straight to an offer.
Where can I practise bank-specific HireVue interviews for free?
