A front-end job with a boutique investment bank or a back-end job at JP Morgan/GS? One of the biggest mistakes I see students make incessantly is taking a back-end job at a bulge-bracket investment bank. I remember one of my student's parents calling me up to tell me how wrong I was. "How dare you advise my son to take an analyst role at a hedge fund ($10bn AUM) - which I have never heard of over a middle office role at Bank of America?"😡🤬 I mean common!! Helping students get the right job in banking is what I do for breakfast, lunch and dinner everyday. (I have a 90% success rate) The least you could do is word your sentence correctly. 😜 After a 15 mins phone call 📞, he was convinced. He apologized and thanked me in the same sentence. 😲 His son has now moved to San Francisco on a $150k salary first year out of university. Not bad ha? Coming from University of Nottingham, he was willing to put in the effort to not only learn financial modelling and valuations but also follow our job strategy. He was also making a few mistakes in our mock interviews which we ironed out for him. The problem with working in the back-end is once you start off there and God forbid you garner a years experience - that's pretty much the end of a career. I haven't seen anyone from the back-end move into front-office jobs. Back end jobs are.. ❌ Monotonous ❌ Repetitive ❌ Low paid ❌ Will get automated in 3 years time Front end-jobs are... ✅ Intellectually stimulating ✅ Well Paid ✅ Client facing ✅ Affords and opportunity to work with extremely bright people In two to three years time if candidates are willing to work hard in the front-end of banking, no matter how small the brand, eventually they can always join a bigger - more prestigious bank. If you start at the back-end you will stay at the back-end. Looking for an Entry-level Investment Banking jobs? • How our student secured a job at Goldman Sachs?

Check our popular ebook "Top 100 Investment Banking Questions with Answers". Click here to get your copy: https://www.cityinvestmenttraining.com/blog My student is on a 6 figure salary in his second year out of university. He started training with us when his internship got pulled from underneath him due to Covid. Internships are crucial on the CV. So Jack used our 8-week course to make up for that. On the course we covered: 📝 Writing an exemplar CV 🖥️ Technical skills like valuations and financial models 📈 Current commercial climate 🗣️ How to ace your interview Only days after finishing the course, he had an interview with Goldman Sachs. They were shocked. He never studied accounting and finance BUT was able to answer EVERY technical question. (Almost no one is able to do that.) What questions did he get asked at Goldman’s.. ❓How do you forecast working capital items** ❓How do you value an option** ❓Company Valuation questions** Answering these questions made his application stand out and landed him his first high-finance job. A lot of students find themselves in the position Jack was in. Struggling to get an internship because people who have had internships take the spot. It’s a vicious cycle. 👉 Watch Jack's interview here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vH0yCtSAtas

Check our popular ebook "Top 100 Investment Banking Questions with Answers". Click here to get your copy: https://www.cityinvestmenttraining.com/blog LinkedIn is powerful for landing investment banking roles. You’re one conversation away from your dream career! Many of my students use the techniques highlighted below to break into banking. One of them got his first role on LinkedIn, straight out of uni in a US private equity shop. Starting salary ~ $120k base. 🚀 You know what's even more satisfying? He loves his job! Here’s are some of the tips we share on our full programs. Use it to find yourself a dream front-end job 👇 ➡️ Your profile - Get yourself a professional photo (In a suit!) - Update your experience with relevant skills - Include your school, A Level grades, and degree - Use your about section to highlight achievements - Also why you are a good fit for banking - Share your involvement in relevant uni societies. ➡️ Your connections - Message decision makers - VP and above - Search for people who work at banks you are interested in - Start the conversation on a personal level - Find a commonality to speak about (same uni, sport, etc) - Don’t copy and paste the same message! Most important - stay consistent. Aim to message 5 people a day. You’ll be surprised at how many reply!

  • Here is the answer to the most difficult interview question I ever came across

All the students who took our 8 weeks training program, 90% of them found internships and jobs. Please click here https://www.cityinvestmenttraining.com/ to learn more. Check our popular ebook "Top 100 Investment Banking Questions with Answers". Click here to get your copy: https://www.cityinvestmenttraining.com/blog This is the hardest investment banking interview question I’ve come across in my career. Luckily it wasn’t aimed at me. I once overheard my boss at Goldman's laughing, Almost gloating on how he had just put an applicant on the spot. He asked the interviewee (LSE studying economics) “What was the growth of the Asian economy in the mid 1800s?” That is brutal! 😬 It would be very easy to panic - as the applicant did. But remember interviewers are not after the final accuracy of the answer. It's all about how you work it out. Economic growth can be broken down into: ➕ Growth in capital ➕ Growth in labour ➕ Growth in productivity If you can make assumptions such as: This period was around the time of industrial revolution and so it’s safe to assume a 3-5% growth in productivity. Another 4-5% growth in labour given families were much larger back then. Asian economy was a powerhouse - so capital growth of 3 to 5% should be acceptable. Total growth of c.10-12%. The actual answer is much higher when I checked. But the interviewer is focusing on how you put together the analytical building blocks. Difficult questions like this are common in investment banking interviews. Stay calm, and remember to focus on your analytical reasoning.

  • Will ChatGPT affect your six figure banking job?

All the students who took our 8 weeks training program, 90% of them found internships and jobs. Please click here https://www.cityinvestmenttraining.com/ to learn more. Check our popular ebook "Top 100 Investment Banking Questions with Answers". Click here to get your copy: https://www.cityinvestmenttraining.com/blog ChatGPT is is not going to affect front-end of investment banking much. Bloomberg has spent years trying to build a computer that can create financial models and compute valuations. Guess what? They are still working on it. The truth is that banking is as much of an ART as it is SCIENCE. There are multiple opinions involved. You can have 10 people build a financial model using the same data but come out with 10 different conclusions. 11, if one of them studied at Oxford. 😂😂 Why? - Predicting the success or downfall of a company is subjective. No one really knows what is going to happen in the future. - The same goes for predicting the economy. - Could you have predicted COVID and its effects? - The weighting of each data point is subjective. Essentially, everything is based on multiple moving parts. Therefore, it takes a person to be creative with the data they feed into computing the valuation. ChatGPT will have little effect on front-end jobs. Cannot say the same about the impact of AI on middle-office and back-office roles. The bots 🤖 are coming! Moral of the story - you ask? When choosing a career in banking - Play the long game!

  • Here is your personalised job strategy to break into banking

All the students who took our 8 weeks training program, 90% of them found internships and jobs. Please click here https://www.cityinvestmenttraining.com/ to learn more. Check our popular ebook "Top 100 Investment Banking Questions with Answers". Click here to get your copy: https://www.cityinvestmenttraining.com/blog A first-year needs a different strategy than a third year to break into banking. 👉First-years - Focus on securing a spring internship. There are not many going around so it's difficult to get one. Good news is that most students are sleeping at the wheel so not many are applying for spring weeks. Also try applying to boutiques. Major hurdle of securing internships at smaller advisors? Boutiques don't have time to train students so they are looking for strong technical skills and financial modelling training/experience. 👉Second-years If you don’t line up a summer internship, there’s almost certainly no grad job for you at a bank like Morgan Stanley or UBS. That’s how competitive it is. Even 2 years before grad applications. So all focus should be on summer internships. Start using LinkedIn to connect to seniors and VPs. and send out 50 applications a month. 👉 Third-years You should be making 50-100 applications if you have: - Internship experience - Technical knowledge - Strong financial awareness If you lack any of these skills, it's relatively difficult to break in. Instead, set your aims for boutique banks and off-cycle internships. With some more experience, you can start applying for Goldman Sachs etc. Whether you’re first or a third-year there’s work to be done. But make sure you’re doing the right kind of work!

  • Complete guide to using LinkedIn to break into banking

All the students who took our 8 weeks training program, 90% of them found internships and jobs. Please click here https://www.cityinvestmenttraining.com/ to learn more. Check our popular ebook "Top 100 Investment Banking Questions with Answers". Click here to get your copy: https://www.cityinvestmenttraining.com/blog This is a complete guide on using LinkedIn to secure your first job or internship in investment banking. (This works with a brand-new profile but even better with an established account). 👉 Profile You need to look like you’re invested in the industry. Your profile picture should be high quality and formal. Dressed in your nicest suit or dress. Ideally taken in an area like Canary Wharf. But even a white background works. Your ‘About Me’ should show all relevant achievements and accolades. Some good things to include are your: - A-level grades - Any courses/internships you’ve taken - The position you hold in finance society at uni. - Team Sports - Relevant extra-curricular activities Then, talk about why you want to get into banking in the first place. And don’t just mention money - that won’t get you far! A lot of people miss this step❗ Make sure to upload any certificates of any relevant completed courses. This will give your profile an edge over those who don’t do this. 👉 Home Feed First thing to do is to follow all the big names in the space: ✅ Warren Buffett, ✅ Charlie Munger, ✅ Peter Thiel etc. Also, follow the presidents, VPs and other senior roles at the banks that you’re applying to. This is going to curate your feed so you only see banking content, collecting all the tips you can. You can also create content around banking to show off your expertise. For example, you could breakdown the deal on Microsoft buying ChatGPT. Decision makers can find this in their feed. They will see that you have a keen interest and you’ve already taken the time to teach yourself some of the necessary skills. 👉 Messaging Content also helps when you’re reaching out to people. It makes your account look active and if they like your content they’re more likely to reply to your message. Or even reach out to you! When messaging you need to first make sure you’re contacting the right people. Senior Associates and Vice Presidents. Send them a blank connection request (as these have the highest likelihood of being accepted) and message them after they accept. In your message you want to be as brief as possible but include these 3 things: - The reason for reaching out - A relevant achievement (good A-level scores would be best) - Mention something you have in common to break the ice. This could be a sport you both play or maybe you both attended the same university. Take some time to look into the person you are messaging! 👉 Summary These 3 steps aren’t hard to get right. But they need doing. - Set up your profile - Curate your feed - Reach out to the right people Will you do enough outreach that you get the job you’re after? I recommend my 8-week students send around 50 applications a month. I’d recommend doing at least the same in outreach.
